Why the Red Shield?

The Red Shield is a symbol of love, protection, and safety. For people in your community, it is a beacon of hope. The idea that tomorrow can be better. Through a variety of programs and services, we bring comfort, relief, and encouragement to men, women, and children every year. Whether the Red Shield is on the side of our emergency disaster canteen or on the wall of a social worker's office, it is the promise that help is available to those who need it.

Last year The Salvation Army in Kansas and Western Missouri:

  • Served 367,300 meals in various feeding programs.
  • Provided beds for 127,280 nights of lodging.
  • Helped 295,900 people with emergency assistance.
  • Served 14,000 people at disaster sites.

Why You?

You are the reason the Red Shield has the impact it does. Every time the hungry are fed, every time the homeless are sheltered, every time an abused child is rescued; YOU are there. Your generous donation to The Salvation Army is what makes change possible. When you make a donation your gift goes right to work. That is because we are already in your community helping your neighbors.

Will you make your gift right now?

Christy's Story

At The Salvation Army, we assist all types of people – those who have struggled all their lives, those who unexpectedly find themselves in a bind, and even those who have never needed help before, like Christy. Christy had it all: a husband, a newborn, and a new car. However, her idyllic life went up in flames when she found out her husband was leading a double life. She soon lost the house and car. Christy tried to move on with a new man, but his alcoholism was too powerful to fight. Again, she was alone.

Then, Christy lost her job for taking time off work to get her baby medical help. She had nowhere left to turn, so Christy went to The Salvation Army. There, she received a brochure about the Pathway of Hope (POH) program. The pamphlet explained that POH is a holistic program created to guide families to self-sufficiency. “Little did I know this would become the largest blessing in my life,” says Christy. She recently completed her goal of getting a degree in the medical profession, where she finished at the top of her class.

Thanks to caring people like you, Christy’s support network at The Salvation Army can help her find a job nearby and safe, affordable housing.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today or have the resources to be successful if it weren’t for the POH initiative,” says Christy.

We are grateful you help us provide comfort, safety, and resources to those who need it most. There are still many struggling families like Christy’s in our community, but with your continued support, we can ease the burdens of hardworking people who come to us every day.
