Once again, the Southern Indiana community has stepped up and helped The Salvation Army meet the needs of those in need. This generosity resulted in thousands of children receiving gifts and the elderly receiving food, ensuring that the holiday was marked by smiling faces and grateful hearts.
Throughout the holiday season, the Angel Tree program, Red Kettle Campaign collections, and other social service assistance directly benefitted those in the service area of Crawford, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, and Washington counties.
The Angel Tree program provided 28,386 gifts to 3,154 children. The success of this program was possible because of hundreds of hours of volunteering provided by community members who wanted to make a difference. Additionally, 116 families without children were provided with food boxes ensuring those families would not go hungry for the Christmas season.
The iconic Red Kettle Campaign collected $220,004 almost exactly reaching the season’s goal of $220,000. Volunteering as iconic bell ringers at seven area locations were 156 people amassing 2,505 hours, an increase of 20% from the previous year.
“Residents deserve to be proud of the difference their monetary and material donations, as well as their volunteerism, continue to make right here where we live and work,” said Capt. Jonathan Fitzgerald. “In the spirit of accountability, we are pleased to share the impressive results from our Holiday services provided during November and December.”
“We are so grateful for the support during The Salvation Army’s busiest season, as we seek to ensure that our services can continue to help lift up families in their time of need. We recognize this would not be possible without the support through time and giving from our generous community,” said Capt. Fitzgerald. “The true meaning of Christmas is alive and well in the compassionate citizens of Southern Indiana.”
