By the end of the 4th grade, African-American, Hispanic and low-income students are already two years behind grade level.
By the time they reach the 12th grade, the same kids are four years behind.
Children in poverty have greater learning challenges.
Children who live below the poverty line are 1.3 times more likely to develop mental delays or learning disabilities than those who don't live in poverty.
How we help empower youth
The Salvation Army operates youth programs in low and moderate income neighborhoods surrounding the North Minneapolis area. These programs provide children with a safe place to play and learn in a supervised and constructive environment. The Salvation Army will continue to make an effort in the local communities to provide these learning opportunities.
Coats For Kids
Our Coats for Kids program has been keeping Twin Cities children warm for more than 30 years. In that time, donors have provided roughly 334,000 coats and winter accessories to local families in need.
