Devotional: Love vs. Like
By Major Paula Pyle, Officer of the North Minneapolis Salvation Army
There is a difference between “love” and “like.” To like someone means that you are happy with that person. On the other hand, to love someone means that you cannot bear to be without him or her. Truly, the difference between love and like has everything to do with the depth of your emotion.
The greatest example of love that the world has ever known is found in John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but shall have everlasting life.”
God’s love is much deeper than human love. His love is limitless, unconditional, and perfect.
John 15:13 says, "Greater love hath no man than this, than a man lay down His life for His friends."
If someone lays down their life for another person, they die so that the other person can live. That is what God did through His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus was spat upon, ridiculed and murdered – and yet He chose to love his accusers anyway, so that you and I may live. There is no greater love than that.
For an even deeper understanding of what God’s love is like, read 1 Corinthians 13.
