New Year’s resolutions start with Jesus

Jan 28, 2020

By Major Paula Pyle, Officer of the North Minneapolis Salvation Army

At the start of every new year, people create resolutions, goals and projects to change their lives.

A popular resolution, for example, is dieting. People do all they can to eat more fruits and vegetables, and cut down on sweets and fast food. But too often, these people revert to their old ways of eating in a matter of weeks.

No matter what your own resolution is, unless we ask God to step in and take the wheel, we will not achieve our goals. We will be distracted by things like technology, the latest fads, and other worldly pleasures.

The tips below can help you incorporate God into achieving your goals in 2020:

  • Formulate a monthly plan to read the Bible and spend time in prayer.
  • Learn at least one new Bible verse every week. Doing so will imprint the word of God onto your heart and allow you to share it with anyone you meet.
  • Attend a weekly or monthly Bible study or prayer meeting.
  • Find a mentor to pray with either by text, email, phone, facetime, or in person. By taking this initiative to be accountable, you will gain new life in Jesus.
  • Do prayer walks through your home, workplace, and places in your community..
  • Pray for leaders and those in authority.
  • Ask God to give you the spirit of discernment, compassion and love.

Remember: Jesus is just a prayer away. He can help you achieve all of your goals.

"If any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are new." 2 Corinthians 5:17
