Coats for Kids warms bodies and hearts of thousands

Oct 22, 2019

To all of our Coats for Kids donors and volunteers: Mission accomplished. Your generosity has warmed the bodies and hearts of thousands of children across Minnesota and North Dakota.

Coats for Kids provides new and gently-used coats and winter accessories for children of all ages. The program is a godsend to parents like Consonia, a St. Paul resident and mother of two kids, ages 13 and 14. On Oct. 15 she picked up two coats for her children during a coat distribution at the Eastside Salvation Army in St. Paul. It was her first time using Coats for Kids.

“Times are hard right now,” said Consonia, who is currently unable to work due to health issues. “Some people can’t afford a coat, a hat, or gloves. So I really appreciate this. Thank you, Salvation Army.”

North Dakotans have been appreciative of Coats for Kids as well. In Williston, one mother was so thankful that she gave coats on the same day that she received some.

“After she got coats and gloves for her kids, she came back and donated coats that her kids had outgrown so that we could give them to other people,” said Lt. Rachel Irvine, Williston Salvation Army administrator. “I thought that was so cool.”

A handful of Salvation Army locations in the Twin Cities, Greater Minnesota and North Dakota have not yet held their coat distributions (see locations), so there is still time to receive a coat or donate one. In the Twin Cities, you can also help by donating $20, which The Salvation Army will use to buy a brand-new coat for a local child in need.

The Salvation Army thanks all of our donors and volunteers for helping to make this year’s Coats for Kids a success.
