Mpls Mayor Jacob Frey, hoops legend Lindsay Whalen distribute turkeys
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota basketball legend Lindsay Whalen on Nov. 22 helped distribute hundreds of turkeys and Thanksgiving food baskets at The Salvation Army in North Minneapolis, as part of a 2,000-turkey donation from Jennie-O. (View event photos.)
Long lines of people showed up to pick up a turkey, including a local single mother named Blanca. She is unemployed and trying desperately to find a job.
“I am grateful for the services I get from The Salvation Army,” said Blanca (pictured). “Without this, my child and I would not be able to survive right now.”
Frey was thrilled to help the local community.
“I’m hugely appreciative for Lindsay Whalen being here and The Salvation Army for all the work they’re doing to get these turkeys out for people who are going to have a great Thanksgiving because of it,” Frey said.
Whalen also enjoyed her time at the event.
“These people are thankful and grateful to be here – it’s fun to be able to do this as we enter the holidays,” she said.
Additional Jenni-O turkeys are being distributed at other Salvation Army locations in the Twin Cities.
“These turkeys are a big win for our community,” said Captain Amanda Hoscheit, administrator of the Northeast Minneapolis Salvation Army. “Our philosophy is person first, dignity first – so we are happy to provide these families with the opportunity to invite their friends and neighbors over for a meal and bring the community together.”
