Knowledge is a ticket out of poverty

By the end of the 4th grade, low-income students are already two years behind grade level.

By the time they reach the 12th grade, the same kids are four years behind.

Children in poverty have greater learning challenges.

Children who live below the poverty line are 1.3 times more likely to develop mental delays or learning disabilities than those who don't live in poverty.

How we help empower youth

The Salvation Army operates youth programs in low and moderate income neighborhoods across the Virginia area. These programs provide children with a safe place to play and learn in a supervised and constructive environment. The Salvation Army will continue to make an effort in the local communities to provide these learning opportunities.

After-School Programs

The Salvation Army community centers provide after-school programming to give youth and teens a safe place to complete homework, learn new skills and relax with their friends. We host these programs every other Wednesday from 2:30 - 5 p.m. coinciding with the Virginia Public School District early release schedule.

School Supplies

School supplies are available for children for grades K-7. Registration is from June 28 - July 31. You can register by clicking here
