Hundreds of families receive free groceries in North Minneapolis

Apr 8, 2024

Your support of The Salvation Army’s Annual Food Drive made a big impact Saturday morning when hundreds of North Minneapolis residents received free bags of groceries filled with food donated during the drive. (View photos.)

The giveaway was held in a parking lot near the North Minneapolis Salvation Army, where dozens of volunteers served a free drive-thru lunch and stuffed food bags into cars and trucks lined up around the block.

Among the food recipients was Tonia, a wife and mother of two who is employed at a local school. The food was a big help to Tonia because her school was on spring break and she works as a paraprofessional, leaving her with no income for the week. “My husband has been Door Dashing to help keep us going, but sometimes money is really, really tight,” Tonia said. “We appreciate this food so much.”

Local businesses contributed additional food for the giveaway, including:

This year’s Annual Food Drive raised many tons of food and more than $500,000 to fight hunger in Minnesota.

The Salvation Army is one of Minnesota’s largest food providers for those experiencing hunger, operating 22 food pantries and 13 hot meal programs throughout the state.

“We sincerely thank all of partners, donors and volunteers who supported this year's Annual Food Drive,” said Lt. Col. Randall Polsley, leader of The Salvation Army Northern Division.
