Army continues to serve in flood ravaged Carolinas
The rain may have stopped in North and South Carolina, but the clean-up is expected to take months and The Salvation Army will be there every step of the way. Emergency disaster relief workers have coordinated with state and local officials in both North and South Carolina to serve the communities that need help the most.
“The Salvation Army in South Carolina is responding to immediate needs all over the state,” said Mike Patterson, emergency disaster services director for The Salvation Army of North and South Carolina.
Salvation Army mobile kitchens continue to serve food and beverages to thousands of people affected by the flooding. In many cases, they are providing the only food and clean water available for the people living there.
The historic floods killed 19 people and have left tens of thousands with no running water or electricity. More than 800 people have lost their homes.
Here is a snap shot of just some of the people The Salvation Army is serving:
- A community whose closest grocery store is 30 minutes away and was destroyed in the flood.
- A cotton and peanut farmer who lost his entire crop.
- A woman who is trying to get food to her parents who are trapped and cannot get out.
- A member of the National Guard who was serving as a first responder.
- A school teacher from a rural town.
- A young boy who loves pork chops, and we were able to deliver them to him.
In the weeks ahead, The Salvation Army will continue to serve the people of North and South Carolina who need help, thanks to your support.
