Devotional: Walk by faith, not by sight

Oct 19, 2016

Life will always be difficult. But even more problems arise when you live according to your own will instead of God’s.

The Bible is rife with examples. The Israelites, for instance, were convinced they could not drive out those who occupied Canaan – the Promised Land – despite God’s promise that they could. The Israelites went on to roam the wilderness for 40 years until a man of true faith, Joshua, led them into Canaan. The story shows that when we heed God’s command, awesome things are guaranteed to happen.

The Salvation Army witnesses these awesome things every day. Take, for example, a 36-year-old single man who arrived to us broke, homeless and addicted to alcohol. He had been living life according to his own will. But after reading the Bible and following God’s word, he underwent a miraculous transformation. Today, he is lead pastor of a Salvation Army church in Grand Forks, N.D.

“Whoever despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who reveres the commandment will be rewarded” (Proverbs 13:13, ESV).

Pray for strength

Resisting temptation is a daily battle that never goes away. The next time you are tempted, ask God for the strength to do what is right. “The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should” (Galatians 5:17, CEV).
