Extreme heat: Twin Cities operation centers open as cooling centers

Aug 26, 2024

With the heat index expected to reach dangerous levels today, most of The Salvation Army’s operation centers in the Twin Cities are open for people to come inside and cool off.

The following locations will be open to the public weekdays during business hours.

  • 10011 Noble Parkway, Brooklyn Park
  • 2024 N. Lyndale Ave., Minneapolis
  • 2727 Central Ave. NE., Minneapolis
  • 1604 E. Lake Street, Minneapolis
  • 1019 Payne Ave., St. Paul
  • 401 W. 7th St., St. Paul
  • 2080 Woodlynn Ave., Woodbury

As our community braces for the extreme heat, The Salvation Army is reminding people how to stay safe.

  • Stay indoors as much as possible, keeping blinds/shades drawn and fans going.
  • Avoid intense outdoor activities, especially during midday.
  • Stay hydrated – drink water and sports drinks as much as possible. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothes. When outside, wear sunscreen and brimmed hats.
  • Check on your neighbors – seniors, children and those who have health issues or disabilities are especially vulnerable.
