Roseville, Minn. – The month of July is coming to an end and with it a chance for The Salvation Army food shelves to have their donations matched.
So far donations are just a fraction of where they were this time last year. Rather than receiving donations of several thousand dollars, food shelves are only seeing a few hundred.
Time is running out. The Salvation Army and Open Your Heart to the Hungry Food Shelf Challenge ends July 31. Any donations made to The Salvation Army food shelves between now and then will be proportionally matched by Open Your Heart and Hunger Solutions.
To donate, drop off your food donation or send a check to any participating Salvation Army Worship and Service Center. The Salvation Army locations in Albert Lea, Brainerd Lakes area, Duluth, Fairmont, Hibbing, St. Cloud and Virginia are all participating in the matching grant. You can also donate online.
“During the summer we see an increase in the number of families who come to us for help,” explained Lieutentant Grant Holloway, Brainerd Salvation Army administrator. “Mostly because parents are now feeding their children three meals instead of the usual two. It’s an increase expense which makes the July food shelf challenge even more important.”
