Food shelf donations matched in July

Jul 1, 2015

July is the hottest time to donate food to your local Salvation Army, both literally and figuratively.

All this month, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless will proportionally match food donations made to Salvation Army food shelves across Minnesota, up to $5,000. The more money an individual food shelf raises in July, the bigger the grant from Open Your Heart.

Salvation Army locations participating in the matching grant include those in Albert Lea, the Brainerd Lakes area, Duluth, Fairmont, Hibbing, International Falls, St. Cloud, all Twin Cities locations and Virginia.

“Summer is especially stressful for families with children and the food shelves that serve them,” explained Lt. Col. Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Northern Division leader. “Summer donations to food shelves are down and when kids are home for the summer, the need is greater. Children miss out on the free meals schools offer and food shelves help to fill the gap.”

To donate, send a check to one of the participating Salvation Army locations or donate to the match online.

Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has 29 years of experience as the only grant provider in Minnesota focused solely on alleviating hunger and homelessness. Since 1986, Open Your Heart has targeted millions of dollars to strategically fight hunger in Minnesota. The nonprofit funds the purchase and transfer of more than one million pounds of fresh produce, meat and dairy products every year through Hunger Solutions Minnesota.
