FoodShare Month gifts allow us to buy food at 12 cents a pound
Roseville, Minn. – The Salvation Army loves a good challenge – especially when it helps feed low-income families. During the month of March, monetary gifts and nonperishable food donations made to The Salvation Army will amount to hundreds of extra dollars from Minnesota FoodShare.
Minnesota FoodShare’s “March Campaign” encourages giving at more than 300 food shelves statewide, including those operated by The Salvation Army. Along with its educational outreach, FoodShare will provide financial grants to The Salvation Army and other agencies based on how much food and money raised in March.
“Our requests for food program support are important all year long,” said Lt. Colonel Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Divisional Commander of Minnesota and North Dakota. “But during March, there are big incentives – we don’t want to miss out on a gift that will help us give hope to even more families.”
The best gift is money. Thanks to a network of low-cost food banks, food shelf managers can purchase pallets of food for as little as 12 cents per pound, or buy milk for under $2 per gallon.
“Money goes a long way with our networks,” Thomson said. “If you want to do the most good, a $10 gift to us will go further than purchasing $25 worth of groceries on your own.”
Although money can increase the buying power for food, there are some items that are seldom available for purchase.
“If you are looking for something tangible to give, peanut butter is perfect,” said Thomson said. “We never have enough, and it is always a welcome protein for families – especially kids.”
All gifts are welcome, Thomson assured. The food drives that blossom at this time of year fill the shelves and also teach children valuable lessons about giving.
“Whatever you do for us is appreciated,” Thomson added. “But please don’t wait. The more you give in March, the more we can share with others.”
