Got time? Volunteer at your local Salvation Army
The Salvation Army Northern Division relies heavily on volunteers throughout Minnesota and North Dakota. Floods cannot be fought without volunteers, food does not get delivered without volunteer drivers, and The Salvation Army store shelves are stocked thanks to the help of dozens of volunteers.
“It’s truly a blessing to have people come forward to help with our mission of meeting human needs in His name,” said Lt. Col. Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Northern Division leader. “Whether people take a couple of hours to bell ring during the busy holiday season or take an hour or two to help serve a meal, every little bit helps and we are so appreciative of all of the support we receive.”
Below are some of our more urgent volunteer needs in Minnesota and North Dakota.
These are just several of the volunteer positions that are currently available. Additional opportunities can be found at a Salvation Army location near you.
Fargo
While nearly every Salvation Army facility across Minnesota and North Dakota needs more disaster volunteers, our location in Fargo, N.D., is especially short. Becoming a disaster volunteer is easy and rewarding. Simply register and attend our training classes. To learn more, view disaster relief information on our website.
Williston
No training or experience necessary to become a food shelf or thrift store volunteer in Williston, N.D.
“Those are our two greatest needs right now,” said Kristin Oxendahl, Williston Salvation Army community engagement director. “More urgently, we need volunteers at our store.”
Oxendahl said the store has grown increasingly busier and busier. Volunteers are needed to accept donated clothes and other items as well as organize and stock the shelves. You can find the store at 14 W. Broadway in Williston. Learn more about helping out in the Williston store.
Fergus Falls
The stores in Fergus Falls and Henning, Minn., could also use a few extra hands. Additionally, the Fergus Falls Salvation Army needs help on Fridays in the kitchen. If you are just thinking about volunteering or looking for a smaller commitment, this is a perfect way to test the waters. But beware: People who begin to volunteer often find it so rewarding they sign up again and again.
International Falls
In International Falls, Minn., there’s a need for volunteers to help with fundraising events, cleaning, organizing and assisting with youth programs. There is literally a laundry list of ways to help. If you have the time, Envoy Beverly Mayfield could certainly use your assistance. Give her a call at 218-283-3394.
Rochester and Mankato
In southern Minnesota, both Rochester and Mankato Salvation Army locations could use your help.
Rochester needs a receptionist for The Salvation Army’s Caring Partners Adult Day Program. If you like to talk on the phone, this is the volunteer opportunity for you. You can fill out a Rochester volunteering application and find more information about the position on the Rochester Salvation Army’s website.
Mankato is in need of a driver who can pick up bread. You do not need to have your own vehicle, but you must have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. You also must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The bread needs to be picked up every morning between 8 and 9 a.m. You can register for as little as an hour-long shift for one day, or feel free to volunteer the entire week. Please contact Captain Mike Parker or Leslie Johnson at 507-345-7840 for more information.
