March Campaign: The hunger pangs stop here

Feb 23, 2018

The stomachs of hungry Minnesotans are rumbling. One in 10 Minnesotans experience food insecurity, and nearly 14 percent of Minnesota children are food insecure (view more stats).

Food is weighed on a scaleYou can help stop their hunger pangs by supporting The Salvation Army during the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. It’s the largest food drive of the year, aimed at stocking all of Minnesota’s 300 food shelves.

Nineteen of those food shelves belong to The Salvation Army. Each one provides fresh produce, meat, milk, and nonperishables to thousands of people every per year.

That includes people like Chris, a Brainerd resident caring for his two nephews while their mother battles mental health issues. He is among the 200 people who receive nutritious groceries at the Brainerd Salvation Army food shelf every week.

“I’m trying to help my sister and her kids, but it’s almost financially impossible,” Chris said. “This food shelf bridges the gap. It’s a blessing.”

As an added incentive, your donations of food or money will be proportionally matched by Minnesota FoodShare, a program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.

Here are four ways to get involved:

  • Give online. Your donation will go to your nearest Salvation Army based on the ZIP code you provide.
  • Donate food. Drop off nonperishable food items at your local Salvation Army in the Twin Cities or Greater Minnesota.
  • Start a food drive. Doing so is as simple as setting out a collection bin at your church, school or place of business, or going door-to-door with your family. Once you’re finished, bring the food to your nearest Salvation Army in the Twin Cities or Greater Minnesota.
  • Volunteer. Are you short on resources to donate? Not to worry – your time is just as valuable. We need help with sorting and stocking donations at our food shelves. Become a volunteer today.
