New meal program, revamped food shelf open in N. Minneapolis
Roseville, Minn. – The N. Lyndale Ave. Salvation Army is celebrating its grand reopening, after months of renovations.
The remodeled and expanded space includes a new food shelf where guests are invited to choose their own food, rather than have staff and volunteers pack up bags of groceries for them.
“This consumer choice model creates a better experience for our guests, and limits waste, as people only take the food they really want,” explained Captain Jim Brickson, leader of the North Minneapolis Salvation Army.
For the first time, this location is also offering a hot meal program, Monday through Friday. Loaves and Fishes will serve food each day from 11: 30 a.m.-12: 30 p.m., and anyone who wants a meal is invited.
The renovation also includes a new weight room, with equipment donated by Snap Fitness in Eagan, a new and improved reception area and remodeled office space where staff can meet with clients.
“We are poised like never before to serve North Minneapolis with new programs,” said Captain Brickson.”Captain Lee and I consider ourselves blessed and ready to meet our divine calling to serve this neighborhood and the people who live here.”
The renovations to the N. Lyndale Ave. facility were made possible by donations from Mary McVay and the late Violet Scott, who left The Salvation Army a gift from her estate.
“The generosity of these two women is going to be a game-changer for North Minneapolis,” Brickson said.
