Red Kettle season: Just 28 days to raise $3 million in the Twin Cities

Nov 19, 2015 | by Julie Borgen

Roseville, Minn. The Twin Cities Salvation Army kicks off a new season of bell ringing on Sat. Nov. 21, as nearly 1,000 people staff kettles across the metro area, from 9 a.m.- 6 p.m. With fewer days to ring this year, the Army has just 28 days to collect $3 million dollars in red kettles; part of it’s $11.6 million Christmas goal.

For the 15th year in a row, Cub Foods is supporting the campaign with bell ringers at all of their metro area stores. Plus, Cub is doubling all donations made to kettles on Saturday, up to $15,000. All Cub Foods shoppers will also be offered an opportunity to round up their bill this weekend, with the extra money going to The Salvation Army.

“The Twin Cities turns out in a big way to support The Salvation Army at Christmas,” said Major Jeff Strickler, Twin Cities Commander. “With a shorter bell ringing season, those donations are critical to help fund our programs all year long.”

Throughout the Christmas season, there are more than 130,000 hours of bell ringing available at 575 metro area kettle sites. Sign up to bell ring, or find other volunteer opportunities.

Did you know?

The average kettle brings in $30 an hour, which is enough to:

  • Buy a week’s worth of groceries for someone
  • Shelter a homeless person for one night
  • Provide a new coat for two children

Plus, look for The Lowry Bridge and the 35W bridge to both go red in support of the kettle kickoff, from dusk on Nov. 21 until dawn on Nov. 22.
