Sweet old lady pens touching letter

Apr 21, 2015

In today’s fast-paced and impersonal world of communicating through emails, texts and social media posts, nothing is more refreshing than receiving a handwritten letter.

Nothing is more heartwarming, either – especially when it comes to the letter we recently received from an 89-year-old widow from Shakopee, Minn. Several weeks ago, our donor relations team opened an envelope containing her note and a $20 donation. Her letter described how her late husband always gave to The Salvation Army, and that she is proud to carry on his practice because “I greatly admire what you do.”

Then, the letter became even more touching:

Recently, my daughter and I were eating at Perkins. When the family in the next booth got up to leave, a young boy about 10 years old approached us and handed me a $20 bill. He said he wanted to help us pay for our meal. The mother explained she was teaching her son to reach out to others with help. My daughter and I were touched. The mom also said “pass it on.”

I want to pass it on to you because I know you will help several others.

I have experienced so many acts of kindness and feel convinced there are angels all around us. Hoping you will have a blessed and happy Easter.

This sweet old lady is right – there are angels all around us. They are the donors and volunteers who make The Salvation Army’s work possible, from supporting our Harbor Light Sheltero giving time to help people in need.

Please join The Salvation Army by making a donation or signing up to volunteer at your nearest location.
