Winter apparel needed, available for those in need

Sep 25, 2013

It’s only a matter of time before the leaves change color and the warm weather fades away. As you begin pulling out your fall and winter wardrobe, please consider donating your outgrown or unused coats and winter apparel. Instead of sitting in the closet for another year, your clothing donation can keep a child or adult in need warm this winter.

Don’t have a coat to donate? You can also give online to help buy coats specifically for kids in need. A $17 donation covers the cost of a brand-new, warm winter coat.

In the Twin Cities, The Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids drive is the only one open to the public – any child in need can get a coat through our drive. Each year, we’re only able to provide coats for a fraction of the families that need them, so there is no such thing as too many coat donations. The more coats we have, the more people we can help. Rest assured your donation is precious.

This year the Twin Cities drive is from Oct. 7-20, though many locations including our eight Worship and Service Centers are already accepting donations. See a full list of donation locations or find out how to receive a coat on Oct. 29 on the Twin Cities Coats for Kids page.

Drives in the North Dakota cities of Fargo and Jamestown not only provide coats to kids, but help keep adults warm, too. Both drives go through the end of September. The Fargo coat distribution is Oct. 14-18 and the Jamestown coat distribution is Oct. 15-19. Both are open to the public.

Many other Salvation Army locations throughout Minnesota and North Dakota collect and distribute coats each year. To find out how to give or get a coat in your community, enter your ZIP code below. You’ll be taken to your local Salvation Army’s page and can contact them directly for details.
