The First Friday of every June is National Donut Day, and The Salvation Army celebrates by giving out donuts to honor our long history of service to veterans. Salvation Army Donut Lassies, women volunteers from all across the United States and Europe, were sent to the front lines to aid soldiers in any way they could during WWI and WWII.

They wrote letters, mended clothing, provided first aid, and eventually set up kitchens to make sweet rings of fried dough to lift the spirits of the soldiers. When the soldiers returned home, they craved the sweet treats they had had on the front lines, resulting in what we now know as the American Donut.
