The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of July 20

Jul 17, 2020

“And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” – Matthew 6:30 & 34

Many of us are worriers. We worry about what we said or did yesterday (or what we didn’t say or didn’t do). We worry about what might happen tomorrow (or what might not happen). We worry about little things and big things. When it comes right down to it, our worry translates as a lack of faith. As Jesus asks us in these verses, why do we have so little faith at times?

The truth is, we worry because we don’t always trust God. We doubt Him. We don’t always have faith that He is with us and for us.

But think back for a moment to a difficult time in your past – a time of hardship, fear, sorrow or suffering (maybe you don’t have to think back that far at all; maybe that time is right now). Through it all, has God ever abandoned you? Has He ever left you alone to flounder, hopeless and lost?

Circumstances don’t always turn out exactly as we wish. We won’t always get exactly what we pray for. But God is a steady and faithful presence; He is always with us, even when we can’t see him or discern His presence. No matter how dire our circumstances, God is here, and He will indeed provide everything we need.

Gracious God, thank You for always being with me, even in the darkest, most worrisome times, even when I doubt Your presence. May I be as faithful to You as You are to me. Amen.
