After school can be a tough time for students. Students can either get involved in an after-school activity or search for something to do, often ending up playing video games, watching TV, or just being bored. Our After-School Program offers an alternative. The school bus brings kids to The Salvation Army Community Center. While there, they receive a snack, tutoring & homework help, structured activities and some time just for hanging out in a safe supervised environment.

What is it?
It's basically a tutoring and latchkey program for Pekin area elementary and middle schools. This program will bus students from school to The Salvation Army Community Center located at 243 Derby St. Once at the community center students will enjoy a snack, tutoring and structured/supervised activities from after school until they can be picked up by their parents or until 6pm.
How much does it cost?
$20/week for 1 child
$36/week for 2 children
$48/week for 3 children
How do I register?
Register from 8am- Noon and 1-3pm starting August 5th. A $20 registration fee will need to be paid at registration. Weekly payments will be paid on the 1st day of that week. Registration will continue until we have hit our maximum capacity.
Do we have to sign up for the whole year?
No. You can pay as you go for the weeks that you need.
What if I'm running late?
In the event that a child gets picked up after 6pm, The Salvation Army will charge $1 per minute until the child is picked up. This fee will need to be paid before the child attends the next day.
I thought The Salvation Army was a church. Will there be a religious component with the program?
Yes. The Salvation Army is a church and there will be posters, materials and information throughout the building that would normally be found in a church. Programs and activities, such as recreational games, tutoring, etc. will serve the purpose for which they were established. There will be areas, such as prayer before snack and devotions that students will be asked to participate in that have a faith-based component.
How well supervised will the program be?
The program will run at a 10-1 student to staff ratio. All staff will have gone through a 3 tier background check, CPR certification, First-Aid Training (all Red Cross certified), and The Salvation Army's Safe From Harm certification.
Is there a Code of Conduct my child and I should be aware of?
The Salvation Army follows the code of conduct that Pekin schools follow. Example: If a child is not allowed to wear certain clothes at school, they can not wear those clothes at The Salvation Army. The same goes for bullying, profanity, vandalism, etc. Code of Conduct policies can be found in the Parent Handbook.
Will my child be made aware of such policies?
Every parent is asked to go through the Code of Conduct policies found in the Parent Handbook with their children before they start in our After School Program. It is up to the parent to review these policies in detail with their children.
Will my child work on homework?
Counselors and staff will help your child complete homework assignments, check planners and communicate with parents about larger school assignments.
What if my child is absent?
PLEASE call Lara Campbell at (309) 346-3010 as soon as you know your child will not be coming. This makes drop offs and snack preparation easier.
