Celebrating Our History of Service: Meeting Hunger

The Salvation Army Food Pantry

Our Peoria Family Services staff offers a food pantry three days a week for people who need assistance in putting food on their tables. We offer those in need a parcel of food – enough to provide three days of food to a family of four. We rely on the generosity of the community to keep our pantry stocked, partnering with businesses, clubs and organizations and individuals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone in our community. Throughout this crisis, the Family Services Staff has stepped up to implement proper safety protocols to ensure the continuation of our Food Pantry Program. From the time that Stay at Home order was announced in March, the exceptional Family Services Staff members have truly joined the “Fight for Good”, and the stats below confirm that.

  • The number of people served through the Food Pantry from March 16 to April 30, 2020: 479
    • Served an average of 24 people per day since the pandemic shut-downs have impacted the community.
    • The average food orders given in January through early March prior to the pandemic shut-downs was 12 to 15 per day.
  • We have averaged double the number of requests for food assistance since the pandemic shut-downs started in mid-March.
  • We have seen as many as 1/3 of our clients coming from a market we haven’t traditionally served: people who have been unable to work because of the Stay at Home orders and business shutdowns, such as hair stylists, store clerks, etc.

Thank you for all you do for the community!
