Proud to be Doing The Most Good
In October of 2020, a family of 5 traveled from Chicago to Peoria, bringing nothing with them other than the clothes on their backs. The parents and 3 children, all under the age of 5, found themselves at the front door of The Salvation Army’s Family Shelter. The family was immediately partnered with a case manager who worked with the parents to set goals. Within just 45 days, both parents secured full-time jobs.
Working with the case manager, the parents were able to save money and find a 2-bedroom home for rent. The Salvation Army was able to assist the family with 3 months’ rent in addition to their deposit.
The case manager shared that “Neither parent had ever had their own place. They had always lived with other people.” With help from The Salvation Army, the family was not only able to save money for the first time in their lives, but they were also able to secure their very own place to call Home.
Today, both parents are still working full time, and are looking to get their oldest child enrolled into Head Start. They expressed that they “…would not have been able to make such progress if not for the help of The Salvation Army”.
National Salvation Army Week is a time for celebrating our organization's history, shining a light on how new people can join to support our mission, and thanking our local partners who make The Salvation Army's work possible. We take this week to showcase many things, but we want to celebrate how proud we are to serve in Peoria.
