LOCAL BUSINESS STEPS UP TO HELP OTHERS THROUGH COVID CRISIS

After the pandemic struck last spring, Michigan Lake Products (MLP) began a promotion in both Elk Rapids and Indian River locations that enticed clients to participate through offering discounts and in turn, turning a percent of those discounts into donations for local food pantries in their service areas.

The Salvation Army of Petoskey was lucky to receive the portion from the Elk Rapids location which was $1,125.00 to kick off Giving Tuesday and spread holiday cheer to struggling residents in Antrim County. The Salvation Army of Petoskey serves residents of Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet Counties with food, clothing, financial, child and senior services. Antrim County residents benefit from the Emergency Financial Assistance Program that helps with rent, mortgage, heat, electricity, other utilities, emergency auto repair and many other things that threaten the livelihood of hard-working low-income individuals and families and those struggling through a crisis.

Envoy, Greg Irwin said “We are humbled by the support that our local community and community partners have demonstrated throughout the Covid pandemic. We appreciate how everyone has come together in a truly heart-felt effort to help our neighbors through this crisis”. This year the need is greater considering business closures, job loss and other issues created by the pandemic. The number of people coming for assistance has increased dramatically and continues to grow.

When asked why he started the fundraising program, Jack McAvoy, owner of MLP said “I know there are a lot of people struggling from the effects of Covid-19 and we want to help. Additionally, he added that he knows “The Salvation Army does a lot of good to help in our community”. MLP, the premier dock manufacturing company in Northern Michigan, carries a wide variety of vinyl dock lines, boat lifts and accessories.
