Help Feed Hungry Kids in Polk County

The Polk County Salvation Army is hosting their annual fundraiser during the month of June to help support the Backpack Program.  The program helps feed hungry kids by providing a backpack full of food to take home over the weekends.  The child’s parents sign up to receive the food resource in their home.  It helps to alleviate hunger by providing a little extra food in the home when children are not in school receiving a free breakfast and lunch.  Each backpack contains a dinner, breakfast, snack, fruit, vegetable and 2x’s a month, a milk coupon.
In the 2020-2021 school year, the program supported over 300 families each week. Each backpack costs approximately $7 to fill with the price fluctuating a bit based on if a milk coupon is included or not that week.  Fundraising Manager Angela Moulton said, “The Backpack Program in Polk County is one of the most widely utilized resources we offer, and it is also one of the most supported.  Last year, we raised over $30,000 to help feed kids in our community.  This year we are hoping to do the same.”
During the month of June, people are being asked specifically to donate to the Backpack Program.  This program supports kids in the following school districts: Amery, Clear Lake, Clayton, Turtle Lake, Unity, Polk County Head Start, Luck and Frederic.  Moulton said, “It takes a community-wide effort to help us continue this important service each and every year.”
There are many ways to help.  Individuals wanting to give to support the program can do so by mailing a donation in to: Polk County Salvation Army MEMO: Backpacks, PO BOX 129, Clear Lake, WI  54005.  As an added benefit, there will be a texting (Online Giving) option too.  Those wanting to support can text the word “Backpack” to 24365.  You will then be routed to an online giving form that will count toward the effort.  Follow the Polk County Salvation Army on Facebook to keep aware of the total progress for this fundraiser.  They plan to keep it updated as they go throughout the month of August.  The organization is still accepting sponsorships of the program from businesses.  Interested business sponsors should call 715-497-4438 to learn more.
