Backpack Distribution Weekend

Aug 7, 2024 | by Daisy Hutzell-Rodman

One of the most exciting times in the year for many children is back-to-school. For many, it means an array of new writing utensils, folders, notebooks, and a backpack in which to place the items. Others, however, struggle to afford these basic supplies to help their students learn.

The Salvation Army strives to make sure every child goes back to school prepared, and those in need of new school supplies for their children can obtain them this coming weekend during the 2024 Salvation Army 7 Can Help Kids Back to School Backpack Distribution.

According to the Census Bureau, 13.8% of children ages 18 and under in Nebraska live below the poverty line. That percentage goes up for people of color, for those with lower education levels, and many other factors. This Backpack Distribution is a great relief for people who otherwise cannot afford the $500-plus in expenses, estimated by several sources.

“It means so much to our community to have this available,” said Lt. Marsha Williams-Miller, commander at The Salvation Army North Corps. “When you see these kids, and you hand them a backpack full of all the things they need for the new year, and you tell them, ‘it’s for you,’ they just light up.”

Thanks to generous donors, thousands of backpacks have been collected to help children be ready to go back to school. Those backpacks have been stuffed with school supplies — from pencils to hand sanitizer — by dozens of volunteers, and The Salvation Army thanks them for their time.

Students entering kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to receive a backpack with proof of school enrollment. Distribution will happen until supplies are exhausted.

Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10, backpacks will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon, and then from 1-3 p.m., at two locations: Renaissance Village Campus at 3612 Cuming St. (in the gymnasium) and Salvation Army Kroc Center at 2825 Y St. (enter from 27th St.). These distributions are walk-up only.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, an additional location will distribute backpacks from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the northeast parking lot of Westroads Mall, 1000 California St. This distribution is drive-through only.

A gift to The Salvation Army makes an impact on the lives of those in need in the local community. Anyone can join the effort help those in need through these difficult times by giving here.
