How Salvation Army-Omaha Food Programs “Love Beyond Hunger”
Inflation is hitting family budgets hard this year. Amid the highest levels of inflation seen in decades, grocery store prices are jumping—meaning more and more Omahans are turning to The Salvation Army for help with getting food.
Day after day, our local food programs are responding to that need. We call it “Love Beyond Hunger.” We serve all people with the love and support they need to find a new way forward. The following are just a few examples of the lengths to which we’re going to help people find relief amid this economic storm:
- Our Burrows Center Pantry, which fills thousands of food orders each year, saw demand spike 67% year-over-year in August
- Between June 1 and August 5, our Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen mobile free-lunch program served up nearly 17,000 hot, nutritious lunches to kids in need around Omaha
- Between December and February (winter 2021-2022), our Winter Night Watch food trucks served more than 8,000 meals to the homeless on the streets of Omaha
- In 2021 alone, the food programs at our North Corps Community Center distributed more than 29,600 meals to kids in an after-school program and to people in need
- On Thanksgiving Day 2022, we will be delivering 1,000 or more Thanksgiving dinners—with turkey and all the trimmings—to shut-in seniors around Omaha
