The Salvation Army of Omaha Helps Residents Beat the Heat

Jul 28, 2020

As summer temperatures sizzle, The Salvation Army of Omaha is helping residents beat the heat by opening cooling centers at two corps, as well as distributing free fans to those in need.

Cooling centers at the Kroc Center and North Corps are open during periods of extremely hot temperatures to offer an air-conditioned respite from the heat and free bottled water to anyone in need of hydration.

This year, corps staff are taking extra precautions amid the ongoing pandemic to ensure the safety of all visitors – including people utilizing the cooling centers. Staff are wearing masks, practicing social distancing and regularly cleaning and disinfecting high-traffic areas.

Cooling center locations and hours of operation are as follows:

Kroc Center
2825 Y St.
Monday – Friday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Sunday: 12 – 6 p.m.

North Corps
2424 Pratt St.
Monday – Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Also, this past June The Salvation Army partnered with Westlake Ace Hardware to host a fan drive, raising $9,500 to purchase new box fans to help neighbors in need stay cool this summer.

“It’s truly an honor to sponsor this program every year, and it’s heartening to see such generosity from our customers, especially during uncertain times as these,” said Joe Jeffries, president and CEO of Westlake Ace Hardware. “It’s great knowing The Salvation Army can impact thousands of lives with the money raised from the fan drive.”

Fans will be available at The Salvation Army’s Burrows Center for Help and Hope (6101 NW Radial Hwy., Omaha) through September 4.

Those interested in receiving a free fan must be 50 years of age or older or disabled (proof of disability is required). Photo ID, social security card or birth certificate and proof of address are required in order to pick up a fan.

Please call 402-898-5860 with any questions about the fan distribution or eligibility requirements.
