Happiness in Helping Others: A Richmond Woman's Story of Giving Back

Dec 9, 2020

Volunteers come in all shapes, sizes, and from different backgrounds with one purpose in mind – helping others.  This was also true of one anonymous volunteer at The Salvation Army Richmond Corps.  Our anonymous volunteer lived in Richmond for over 70 years and was always looking for ways to help those in need in her community.

“She loved the mission of the Salvation Army and thought we did the best job of helping people in crisis in the community while keeping costs down,” said Major Cappy Moore, corps administrator and pastor for The Salvation Army here in Richmond.

The volunteer spent her time serving food and drink to hundreds of people in the community through The Lord’s Table feeding program.  “Our anonymous volunteer was especially passionate about making sure that people had access to food, and that those struggling with substance abuse had resources to help them overcome addiction,” Major Cappy recalled. “She had a kind heart and gained happiness helping others.”

After her passing, our anonymous donor’s family shared her wish of making a legacy gift through her estate.  Her family honored her wishes with a $7,000 gift from their mother’s estate to The Salvation Army of Richmond.  The family asked that it be used to challenge the community to support The Salvation Army of Richmond with a gift at Christmas and a gift in their wills.  All donations received at in-person Red Kettles located in Richmond on Saturday, December 19 will be matched by this gift.
