Social Service Updates June/July/August 2020


Expanded Social Services

March 9 left us all with a new way of conducting business due to the pandemic-COVID19. We have managed to serve the community with very few volunteers. 

We thank the faithful volunteers who are still able to support us and we hope to be back to normal sometime in the future. Until then we continue to serve families in need. Our food pantry is now being managed from our church entrance off 8th street. 
Social Service Emergency Assistance includes rent/mortgage, utilities, and new due to covid19 we can help families with the internet, bus transportation, and lodging. 


Church Happenings

Church Bible Study begins on June 7 at 10 AM.

Embrace Women’s Support Group: Meet Monthly. Join us at the corps on June 14 at 4:30 pm. Good topics of discussion, food and confidential supportive setting.

Back to School Supplies- Registration and Pick-up dates are below:

August 5: 9 am – 11 am, 1 pm – 3 pm,

August 6: 9 am – 11 am, 1 pm – 3 pm, and 4 pm - 6 pm

August 7: 9 am – 11 am, 1 pm – 3 pm,


Bring State ID or Drivers License, Copy of utility bill in household members name, social security card for all household members over 18. Birth certificates for all household members 18 and under.


Utility Assistance

Throughout the year, the social services department offers emergency utility assistance to Vigo County residents living at or below 150% of the federal poverty level.  Each spring, we see a drastic increase in utility needs as the Duke Energy and Vectren Energy Delivery winter moratorium periods come to an end. In addition to The Salvation Army’s Utility Assistance, there is also the opportunity to be assisted through Terre Haute Ministries Utility Assistance or St. Joseph’s Good Samaritan Program (150%-200% of the federal poverty level).  Funds are limited, so people are encouraged to apply as soon as they receive a disconnect notice to maximize the chance of assistance. 

To apply for assistance, please call our office during our office hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-12:00pm, 12:30pm-4:00pm.

You will need: Picture ID for all adults, proof of address for all adults, proof of income for all adults, and two forms of identification for all children (social security cards and birth certificates preferred.) You will need also need a copy of your utility disconnect notice and a denial letter from your township trustee’s office.


Pathway of Hope

Pathway of Hope is a nationwide program that was launched in Terre Haute in 2015. In layman’s terms Pathway of Hope is client-driven for client success. The objective of Pathway of Hope is to help clients break through generational poverty. The Salvation Army strives at meeting the basic human needs, with no plans of stopping soon. Pathway of Hope is The Army’s way of reaching the root cause of poverty. Through educating clients and offering unwavering support, Pathway of Hope has tremendously grown in Terre Haute.  

Pathway of Hope Qualifications:

- Child/Children 18 and under

- High Motivation to Change


Going Forward

We are looking for ways we can support the community and partner with other agencies or local businesses. We have a chapel, kitchen, and dining hall which is appropriate for meetings people are invited to rent.

We are also looking for someone to help us with storage space to store kettles, toys, clothing, odds and ends, back to school supplies. This would free up good usable space for classrooms for after school programs or weekly arts/crafts, adult education courses, etc.


Volunteer Needs

1-2 people to assist with answering the phones. Monday thru Friday 8:30 am - Noon and/or 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Janitor Assistance: Light cleaning responsibilities: vacuum, refill soap dispensers, empty trash, water flowers. (3-4 hours once a week)


Hidden Falls Camp and Vacation Bible School

 Summer Camp Scholarships are available to attend Hidden Falls Camp. Camp is located in Bedford, Indiana on 700 acres consisting of indoor swimming pool, hiking and biking trails, climbing wall, paddle boats and a brand-new playground. We offer character building camp, sports camp, music camp, steam camp-engineering, art.

Pantry Needs

Our Hygiene Pantry is in desperate need of the following items: toilet paper, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, men and women’s deodorant, toothpaste, single tooth brushes, feminine hygiene products.
