The Salvation Army of Traverse City Celebrates the 85th Anniversary of National Donut Day June 2, 2023
Help, Hope, and Sweet Holiday Treats That Do Good

This year marks the 85th anniversary and celebration of National Donut Day. Established in 1938 by The Salvation Army, National Donut Day is not only a great excuse to visit your favorite local bakery but also a reminder of the bravery of The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who joined soldiers’ on the front lines during World War I.

In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and fresh baked donuts. The sweet treat did more than raise spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives.

Today, The Salvation Army continues serving on the front lines of our local communities by providing a wide range of programs and services to vulnerable individuals and families in need. In Traverse City, The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services also has the privilege to provide beverages, snacks, meals, as well as emotional and spiritual care to first responders and survivors. The Salvation Army strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations.

“Over the last 85 years, The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to those in need locally and across the country.” said Lt. Matt Winters. “Today, Donut Day is a tradition to celebrate the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts and emotional and spiritual care to those in need.”

This Friday, June 2, in honor of National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of Traverse City will deliver donuts and gratitude to area first responders as our thanks for the sacrifice of their time, strength, ambition, health, and their lives to protect and serve our communities and country. Donuts are generously provided by Meijer.
