Florence Has Left but the Work Isn't Done

Sep 26, 2018

Hurricane Florence hit the eastern coast nearly two weeks ago, destroying neighborhoods, beaches and more. Since then, media reports have reduced, but The Salvation Army is still there – still caring for families as they start to rebuild their lives.

Thousands of Salvation Army officers, staff and volunteers are working in the Carolinas to care for those impacted by the hurricane, including those from the Chicagoland area.

In response, the Army has provided:

  • 243,000 meals
  • 190,000 drinks
  • 129,000 snacks
  • 600 food boxes
  • 1,200 comfort kits
  • 300 clean-up kits
  • Emotional and spiritual care for 15,200 individuals
  • 58,000 hours of service
  • 52 mobile kitchens are in service with 37 on standby

The work of recovery and rebuilding in the Carolinas is far from over. Families have lost everything, and are struggling to find hope and the will to start again. The Salvation Army is there to provide, not only physical support such as shelter, food and clean-up kits, but also a shoulder to cry on, a set of ears to listen with and someone to pray with.

In times of disaster, the best way to help survivors and relief workers is to make a financial contribution. Monetary donations allow disaster responders to immediately meet the specific needs of disaster survivors.
