The Salvation Army Responds to Alabama Tornadoes
The Salvation Army has responded to the tornado outbreak in Lee County, Alabama that spawned EF4 tornadoes and killed more than 20 individuals.
“We stand ready to provide hope and comfort to this community which has lost so much in this devastating storm,” said Terry Lightheart, Divisional Director of Emergency Disaster Services for The Salvation Army Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Division.
An Incident Command Team and four mobile feeding units from Anniston, Birmingham and Montgomery have been deployed to the the area to provide hot meals, snacks, beverages and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and residents throughout the county.
In the immediate hours following the storm, The Salvation Army Lee County Service Center provided 200 meals to first responders. Service delivery will continue throughout Lee County today and include the distribution of hot meals, snacks, and beverages served from six mobile feeding units.
As of March 6, The Salvation Army has provided:
1,050 meals
670 snacks
450 beverages
20 personal hygiene kits
25 backpacks
In addition to tending to the physical needs of those affected, The Salvation Army is providing emotional and spiritual care, which is expected to be a significant need in the wake of this especially cruel and deadly disaster. The National Weather Service reports that more tornado deaths occurred from this one outbreak than in all of 2018.
