Angels Are Everywhere
I saw the phrase “Angels are everywhere” in a lot of places during the weeks leading up to Christmas 2024. It appeared in social media posts, on a billboard near my home, and when something positive but unexpected happened, it was spoken out loud. This phrase can be applied to many different situations. At the time, I couldn’t have imagined that I would find myself in one of them.
According to spiritual beliefs, angels are present all around us. They actively watch over and guide people in their daily lives, even if we can’t physically see them. They offer divine protection and support, especially when facing challenges. Angels are also considered messengers of God, so their presence signifies that God’s will and care are always present in the world. What a beautiful thought.
It was during a volunteer opportunity in St. Louis, Missouri, for The Salvation Army Midland Division Angel Tree toy distribution event, that I saw angels on Earth. They converged in a repurposed storefront, dressed in street clothes and many with corporate logos embroidered on their shirts. Each one wore a handwritten name badge they received at the volunteer check-in table. To my delight, these angels were all different ages, from diverse backgrounds, and so enthusiastic about doing the most good in their community.
They came together to help with the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts to children in need. For several weeks, generous donors had purchased toys, books and stocking stuffers for area families struggling to make ends meet. It was a glorious vision to see so many volunteers come together to lift up their neighbors!
On that brisk winter day, the volunteers were assigned to work one-on-one with a parent/guardian as they “shopped” for gifts. Together, they navigated the large tables filled with brand new items for children of all ages. And when the selections ran low, other volunteers quickly moved in to replenish them. The process appeared seamless.
In the midst of it all, I was struck by the smiles and conversations that were taking place around me. Total strangers were laughing and finding common ground while talking about their children and holiday experiences. I watched love and kindness fill up the space.
By giving their time and energy, the volunteers protected the hearts of children at Christmas and preserved the dignity of adults who needed assistance. They acted as angels by ministering care and bringing encouragement to others in their own unique way . When the event was over, 2,660 families in the St. Louis metro area were served, and 6,040 children acquired gifts. It was a blessing given and received.
