Salvation Army Origins

More than a century of services to those in need

Video: National Salvation Army Week & Our Longest-Standing Programs

Salvation Army Central Territory Museum Director, Nanci Gasiel, leads us through the history of how National Salvation Army Week came to be and the origins of the Salvation Army programs that led to this national recognition by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. Many of our core programs today began more than a century ago, including our stores and rehabilitation centers, emergency disaster services, and kettles to meet the most immediate needs of a community. Come along on the journey through time to see some of the earliest Salvation Army photos of service in America and learn how we became the organization we are today.
