On Sunday, November 5, more than 25 Bank of America employees volunteered at the Detroit Harbor Light community kitchen. The volunteers made sandwiches which will be distributed via the Bed & Bread Club® truck’s 60 daily stops.
Bank of America a long-time supporter of The Salvation Army and is heavily involved in supporting the community by encouraging its employees to volunteer – on their own, or as part of a group.
“Bank of America really takes pride in volunteering in our community and helping the communities we serve. So, throughout the year we all volunteer at various events. That’s part of what we do in the organization,” said Tanya Dupree, Vice President, Market Leader at Bank of America, who organized the event.

To one volunteer, Jennifer, who was introduced to the Bed & Bread program 22 years ago, making the sandwiches is particularly meaningful. Having rode the truck multiple times she has seen its impact firsthand:
“I remember when we pulled up to one of the stops a gentleman came up and said, ‘can I have one extra sandwich?’ and he pointed at a house, and there was a little girl in there.
He said ‘her mom is at work, and she won’t eat today. But if I can bring her a sandwich, I want to make sure she eats.’ And I remember almost crying inside the truck, just seeing the impact of this program.”
*Volunteers have fun packing sandwiches
In addition to Sunday’s volunteers, every year Bank of America donates a $50,000 grant for the “Bountiful boxes” program – holiday food boxes with ingredients for a variety of meal options that are distributed to individuals and families in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
“We are proud to continue to support The Salvation Army in its effort to eradicate food insecurity for individuals and families across Metro Detroit,” said Matt Elliott, President, Bank of America Michigan.
“Our employee volunteers look forward to helping pack the “Bountiful Boxes” and we hope this grant will go a long way as an impactful resource for the upcoming holidays.”
