Emergency Overnight Shelter Opened in Bloomington
The Salvation Army of Bloomington has been asked by officials with Monroe County Emergency Management to host an emergency overnight shelter for storm victims at its facility located at 111 N. Rogers Street. Local residents are invited to come to The Salvation Army for safe shelter, food, and access to restroom and shower facilities.
The Salvation Army has set up 40 cots in its gymnasium for overnight guests and will be preparing meals for guests while the temporary shelter is activated. Storms that swept through southern Indiana overnight left tens of thousands of households without power. According to Duke Energy's outage map there are still more than 34,000 households in and around Bloomington without power.
Those in need of shelter are encouraged to head to The Salvation Army for assistance. Because internet is currently down in much of Bloomington, including at The Salvation Army, those with questions are encouraged to call or text Captain Vinal Lee at (765) 227-6909.
"The Salvation Army has over 100 years experience responding to natural disasters, so we are prepared to help in situations like these," said Captain Lee. "We are here to make sure that families feel safe and are in an environment where they can start to process and move forward from that emergency."
