Enjoy the Sounds of the Season with The Salvation Army’s Free Concert
Need a little help getting in the holiday spirit? The Salvation Army Chicago Staff Band is hosting their annual Sounds of the Season concert on November 27 at Edman Chapel in Wheaton, Illinois. They will be joined by the Midwest choir of The Salvation Army’s Central Territorial Staff Songsters. Tickets to the concert are FREE but must be requested in advance (see details below).
Trumpeter Mark Ridenour, the assistant principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), is this year’s featured guest. Before joining the CSO, Mark played with the Lexington (Kentucky) Philharmonic, Dayton (Ohio) Philharmonic, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Florida Orchestra. He is also currently on the faculty of Roosevelt University and Wheaton College.
The Chicago Staff Band upholds The Salvation Army’s strong brass band tradition. Founded in 1907, this band originated with a gathering of Salvation Army employees (thus the name). In addition to staff members, the band now includes members of Army congregations from throughout the greater Chicagoland area.
Though the group is now more diverse than at its founding, Chicago Staff Band members share at least three common interests: a love and desire to serve God, commitment to the ministry of their respective Salvation Army worship center, and quality musical talent that is willingly shared on a volunteer basis.
The band performs monthly throughout the midwestern United States, and to date has played concert tours in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Philippines, Chile, Jamaica, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, South Korea, New Zealand, and, most recently, Nigeria.
The Chicago Staff Band’s 2021 Sounds of the Season concert will be held Saturday, November 27, at 7:00 p.m. Though not affiliated with Wheaton College, the concert will be in Edman Chapel (401 E. Franklin Street in Wheaton, Illinois) on the Wheaton College campus. To secure your free tickets, contact The Salvation Army Music Department at 847.294.2133 or csb@usc.salvationarmy.org.
