Ford Volunteers Help Fight Hunger at the Detroit Harbor Light Community Kitchen
On Wednesday October 11, employees from Ford volunteered at the Detroit Harbor Light community kitchen.
The 25 volunteers helped prep a variety of foods to be donated via the Bed & Bread Club® truck, and in the Detroit Harbor Light cafeteria. They included: bologna sandwiches, cabbages for beef stew, and peppers.
Most of the volunteers were from the electric vehicle team and human resources. When asked his thoughts on the event one volunteer, David, said:
“It’s nice to be able to do something with the team and feel like you’re doing something other than normal. We know we’re helping a lot of people.”

Ford gives its employees 16 hours a year for volunteering, and the opportunities are set up by Ford’s charitable wing, The Ford Fund.
Electric vehicle team lead, Mike, worked with The Ford Fund to set up the event:
“This is our first time this year getting out,” he said. “The Ford Fund is a big help in organizing this: We reached out to them and asked, ‘what would be our greatest impact?’ and they said food scarcity needs.”

Ford has been a valued partner to The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit for many years including involvement in the annual Bed & Bread Club Radiothon.
Most recently, volunteers from The Ford Fund helped out in the kitchen on National Volunteer Week.

Also in attendance was Jonathan Hicks, the new Director of Corporate Grants and Foundation Relations, who helped organize the event. He is taking the reins from Christina Gallop, who filled the role for the last 20 years.
“Christina has a legacy here, that’s for sure. 20 years is a lot. I’m hoping to expand on everything she built.”
We are grateful for our friends at Ford for their generous support throughout the year and to everyone who makes these events possible.
If you would like to support The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer or donate all year round!
