In Service to Others
"B-7...G-54...BINGO!" Bonnie checks the participant’s card and exclaims, “You won! Select your prize!” Just a year ago, Bonnie was merely a participant in the weekly Bingo nights at the Fountain Square Corps Community Center, but today she orchestrates the event each week. Her involvement in the corps has grown in the past year and now includes Tuesday Bible study, distributing snack packs to the homeless, and assisting with the prayer ministry.
“My favorite part is learning about the people who come in for help,” Bonnie explained. “I smile and try to be a light of hope for some of these people who come in struggling because I was there once needing support.”
Serving and caring for others has always been ingrained in Bonnie’s character. She had worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a housekeeper, and a case worker for home healthcare agencies. Retirement temporarily clouded her sense of purpose. “I needed to do something,” she recalled, “so I prayed to ask God to guide me.”
Bonnie moved to Indianapolis in 2018 when she was facing many personal challenges, including battles against depression, cancer, and tremors. Yet, amidst all the adversity, she persisted and relied on prayer for guidance. Bonnie discovered Bingo Night at Fountain Square through a neighbor's recommendation, an event that unexpectedly helped her embark on a journey of renewal.
“As time went on, Major Mary saw something in me that I knew was still there, but didn’t know how to bring it back out,” Bonnie shared. “They welcomed me here with open arms and allowed me to be me.”
Soon after Bonnie acquainted herself with The Salvation Army, she became a pivotal volunteer, helping wherever she could. Serving other people at the corps helped her get back to the Bonnie she had been for so many years.
“Bonnie has been such a blessing to us at Fountain Square,” said Major Mary Thomas. “She has a compassionate and servant heart that cares for others in an extraordinary way.” Recently, Bonnie participated in the "Connect Up" prayer training, hosted by The Salvation Army in New Albany, Indiana. The two-day event afforded her profound insights, enriching her prayer ministry.
Transitioning from a behind-the-scenes contributor to a front-facing figure, Bonnie's presence at the Fountain Square Corps radiates warmth and hospitality. Her infectious smile and dedication ensure that all who enter the building receive a heartfelt welcome, be it through prayer or assistance with essential tasks.
“When I think about the motto ‘Doing the Most Good’ I think about all the people here teaching me,” Bonnie added. “The Salvation Army has given me another tool to worship God.”
