Love Beyond the Classroom with Wayne Westland Corps Community Center
Every Wednesday at 4:30 pm, the Wayne Westland Corps Community Center becomes abuzz with the sounds of children discussing their homework, dribbling basketballs, and playing with their friends. Across Metro Detroit, all our after school programs like this one are giving kids a fun, safe place to finish homework, blow off steam, and have a nutritious meal.
“Everyone is welcoming,” says Maddy, a second grader who started coming to the program in fall 2021. “I do my homework and then I play a game with my friends, or I color. The dinner is good, too!”
“Often, working families struggle to find childcare after school, while parents are still at their jobs or commuting,” says Andy Barylski, pastor of the Wayne Westland Corps Community Center. “We offer kids a place to develop mentally, emotionally, and spiritually here. Kids should have as many opportunities as possible to succeed in their life, and we want to help provide some of them.”
Children in the first through eighth grade are eligible to join the free after school program. Volunteer tutors help kids who struggle in certain subjects, and a full dinner is served afterwards.
“My favorite subject is math, and I like to do my math homework here!” says Rylee, a fourth grader. “The adults here are nice, and we get to play with our friends after our work is done!”
