Opportunities for Seniors in the Great Lakes Division
During the month of May, The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division is highlighting our programs for Seniors across the state. An estimated four out of five adults struggle with near-poverty, joblessness, or dependence on welfare and more than 14% of Americans over age 71 are affected by dementia.
Our programs help heal the mind, body, and souls of adults in every stage of life. The Salvation Army gives seniors a toolkit for success through basic needs help, education and skill supplementation, activities for older adults, community care ministries and volunteer opportunities.
So how do we help in Michigan? Corps across the state have great opportunities:
Royal Oak: A Senior’s program meets two Fridays every month for games, crafts, bible study and lunch.
Downriver: Golden Agers Bingo is held on Mondays and Golden Agers Chair Zumba is every other Friday.
Mt. Clemens: A senior’s program is hosted three days a week which includes games, and there are trips to various fun locations throughout the year.
Port Huron: The Retirees Club offered a Garden Day last month, and in May will host a movie night. Those interested can download the spring schedule
Conner Creek: Senior Luncheons and Senior Computer lab is hosted on Wednesdays.
For seniors struggling with food scarcity there are food pantries at many of our corps community centers, such as Dearborn Heights, which requires an appointment, Conner Creek, and Farmington Hills, which has a drive-through on Wednesdays.
During the Christmas season whole meals were donated by Bank of America and distributed through the Bountiful Boxes program. For seniors struggling to pay their utilities, The Salvation Army’s Energy Assistance Services (EAS) program can help.
