The Weekly Devotion for the Week of July 8
Jesus calls us to a life of self-denial, daily commitment, and true discipleship.
Jesus begins by saying, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself.” This is a radical departure from the world’s message of self-fulfillment and self-gratification. In our culture, we are often told to seek our own happiness, but Jesus calls us to a different path.
Next, Jesus says, “take up his cross daily.” The cross, a symbol of suffering and sacrifice, is central to the Christian faith. Taking up our cross daily means embracing the sacrifices and challenges that come with following Christ. It is a daily commitment.
For the early disciples, taking up the cross meant facing persecution and even death for their faith. While most of us may not face physical persecution, we are called to endure hardships, resist temptations, and stand firm in our faith amidst a world that often opposes it.
Jesus concludes with the call to “follow me”. Following Jesus is the essence of discipleship. It means walking in His footsteps, imitating His character, and living according to His teachings. It is a journey of transformation, where we become more like Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.
Following Jesus requires a heart of obedience and willingness to go wherever He leads. It is not always an easy path, but it is a path filled with purpose, peace, and the assurance of His presence with us. It means trusting in His guidance and relying on His strength, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.
May we be a people who deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Jesus with unwavering devotion.
