The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of June 26
God asks us to fight the good fight.
When you think of fighting, you might think of a battle or war, but in 1 Timothy 6:12, we are asked to fight a spiritual battle rather than a physical one. We are asked to join God in His fight of faith against our common enemy, Satan.
In 1 Timothy, Paul relies on Timothy to pastor the church of Ephesus and prepares him for the challenges he will face as a leader of a community that is under Roman rule. In 1 Timothy, Paul gives Timothy encouragement and warnings of what is to come.
During this good fight, we are putting our trust in the Lord that He will take care of us and provide for us. There will be times when our fight is not easy. Paul knew this and reminded Timothy to not lose hope, but rather look to the Lord and remember his confession of faith “in the presence of many witnesses.”
In verse 11, we are asked to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness.” We are called to rely on those attributes for support as we resist Satan and the things of this world.
This verse is a great reminder to us in our Christian lives. We must hold fast to what is true: eternal life with Jesus. We can thank God that Jesus has already died on the cross for our sins, so we don’t have to; that’s what makes our fight…the good fight.
