The Weekly Word - A Devotion for the Week of September 12
Every day we are on the receiving end of a constant barrage of messages directing us to where and how we can find “life.” From our social media feeds to our email in-boxes, a continuous stream of ads, promotions and marketing ploys offer an endless number of opportunities -- all promising health, wholeness, meaning and happiness.
The truth, though, is that tend we look for life in all the wrong places.
We look for meaning in our work – in the next achievement, accolade or promotion.
We look for meaning in material things – in the fancy house, the name-brand jeans, the high-end car, the newest iPhone.
We look for meaning in the latest diet, exercise fad or beauty trend.
In spite of all our efforts, we consistently come up empty.
John’s words remind us that true life isn’t found in what our culture offers and values. Most of us spend our time, energy and resources chasing after false sources of life and light, when in fact, true life is found only in and through the sustaining love of Christ.
Today, let us turn toward the One who is our one and only true source of life.
Gracious God, I admit, I am easily wooed by the shiny, glitzy enticements our culture offers. Keep my heart in line with You, Lord, as the source of my strength, hope, light and love. Amen.
