The World’s Tallest Red Kettle Set Up in Detroit’s Cadillac Square
Last Friday, November 10, the world’s tallest red kettle was set up in Cadillac square in anticipation of The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s Red Kettle Kickoff Friday.
The kettle’s 26,000 LED lights will be lit at the Detroit tree-lighting ceremony while The Salvation Army's Divisional Brass band plays festive tunes. Mounted on the tallest red kettle is an LED sign describing the impact of donations, and thanking The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s generous partners.
The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign launched at the beginning of October and will continue till the end of January. This year’s fundraising goal is $7.9 million to help support communities in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.
The campaign underscores the importance of aiding neighbors in need who may be without necessities like food and shelter during the Christmas season and beyond.

Major Toni Dorrell, General Secretary and Metro Detroit Area Commander, attended the setup and was interviewed by Local 4 news.
“With the rising cost of living, economic insecurity and inflation, families in metro Detroit are facing financial uncertainty. Some may lack proper shelter, a warm meal or may even be choosing between paying rent and buying presents this Christmas,” said Major Toni Dorrell.
“We owe it to our neighbors in need to come together and lend a helping hand when times get tough. When you give to The Salvation Army, your donation makes it possible for us to help our community’s most vulnerable 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.”
The tallest Red Kettle will remain lit throughout the Red Kettle Christmas season as a reminder to all who see it that The Salvation Army is dedicated to serving those in need throughout metro Detroit. And hopefully, to inspire passers-by to spread Love Beyond Christmas as well.
If you have been inspired to help us in our mission, you can donate to The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit’s virtual red kettle, or volunteer as a bell ringer at registertoring.com.
