This week, December 19, the Toy Shop at the Warren Corps kicked off their yearly Toy Shop in the center’s gym. Tables held donated toys and gifts for children of all ages. Families in need of Christmas assistance signed up online and were assigned a Salvation Army caseworker to address the full scope of their needs.

The Warren Salvation Army administrates the MATTS shelter. Matts stands for Macomb’s Answer to Temporary Shelter and hosts individuals, families, and single parents for up to 90 days while helping them plan their next move.

One recent client was Tasha Clemons who received help after a devastating house fire. Now back on her feet, she continues to utilize the support and resources the Warren Corps Community Center and MATTS offer; including the Toy Shop. Another client was Tamika Milledge who expressed her gratitude for the Toy Shop:

“The toys are making our Christmas complete because it’s no stress and we’re able to just enjoy the holidays.”

Major David Minks, who heads the MATTS shelter, stressed the importance of giving to The Salvation Army to support events like the Toy Shop and others like it:

“The Salvation Army serves families year-round.  Serving homeless men and women too at the MATTS shelter and other programing. The old motto is still true today, ‘Need has no Season.’ Please continue to give as we service the most vulnerable populations.”

This year 700 families, 200 Senior adults, and 1250 children have been served by the toy shop (so far).
